Over the past decade, African countries have taken important strides to addressing the high burden of surgical conditions on the continent. We congratulate Bekele et al. for sharing important lessons and insights on surgical healthcare policy development and implementation [
1]. Their plea to ensure collaboration and sharing “the good, the bad, and the ugly,” prompts transparency and openness to advance surgery and anesthesia on the continent, and beyond. Bekele et al. have led or been part of herculean efforts to improve surgical healthcare. In this instance, they focus on specific pearls of wisdom, derived from plans and initiatives advancing surgery and anesthesia in several African countries [
