Diabetes and Parkinson’s disease

We read with interest the meta-analysis by Aune et all showing that individuals with a history of diabetes had a higher risk of Parkinson disease [1]. This article was accompanied by a comment on the intricate connection between diabetes mellitus and Parkinson’s disease [2]. We have done a follow-up study of 640 336 men and women of whom 9083 (1.42%) reported a history of diabetes. Altogether 896 people had Parkinson’s disease as underlying cause of death and 1671 people had Parkinson’s disease mentioned on the death certificate. Furthermore, we examined to what degree both diabetes and Parkinson’s disease were recorded on the death certificate. …
